MADEIRA ISLAND INCREASE IN LUXURY CRUISES IN FUNCHAL PORT
Madeira Island has reported a 69.2% record increase in the number of tourist passengers on cruise-liners in the Funchal port in Madeira. A total of 12 089 registered in June this year opposed to 7 144 in June 2010. Aside from the local population opting ever more to holiday on a cruise liner and embarking from Funchal, a noteworthy increase has also been registered in the number of international tourists embarking from Funchal on cruise ships. The cruise-line industry is playing a leading role in economic prosperity in Europe according to the European Cruise Council. Studies have shown that Funchal port in Madeira Island has been a positive contribution in placing Portugal in 6th position of the most popular cruise line destination coastlines in Europe.
