FUNCHAL, MADEIRA ISLAND IS THE GREENEST IN THE WHOLE OF PORTUGAL
According to the European study “State of European Cities Report - Adding Value to the European Urban Audit” released in 2007 , Funchal city is considered to be the city with the most m2s of green area per capita in Portugal. The statistics which refer to the year 2004 reveal an existence of 102.38m2 of urban green spaces which are available to the public for every 2 of its 100 000 habitants. Funchal city was also ranked top 7th city with the most green area per capita amongst European cities with population figures between 100 000 – 200 000. The report also reveals indicators of the quality of life in 258 cities and 27 countries of the European Union. The European Commission is presently updating the 2004 reports with new information and statistics on urban growth tendencies within the EU.
