FUNCHAL – NEW PORT AND MARINA NEWS
The original plans for the new port in Funchal have been altered. According to recent news the project which was estimated to cost in the region of around €6.5 Million will now cost €15Million and is due for completion in 2010.
The new development will link up to the present 4 traffic lanes on the seaside avenue, leading to the Western highway/express exit via a tunnel, facilitating the flow of traffic alongside this main avenue. Gardens are also planned on both the North and South sides of the harbour. Furthermore a two-storey building offering restaurants, shops and spacious esplanades with parking for over 500 vehicles will be included in the project. The aquarium on the original plan has now been removed to make way for these more advantageous alterations which are intended to improve and encompass the overall sea and marina visual ambience of the whole seafront avenue. In the future, access will also be made via the seafront avenue towards Toco which stretches Eastwards beyond the Old Town.
