MADEIRA ISLAND – REFERRED TO AS A GARDEN IN THE SEA ALREADY BACK IN 1931
An 8 minute black and white movie clip on the culture in Madeira Island dated all the way back to 1931 and produced by a British gentleman by the name of James Fitzpatrick of TRAVELTALK is available on YOU TUBE and has received a total of over 11 000 visits.
This movie clip reflects the British influence on the island dated back to the 1930’s, the introduction of embroidery by an English lady, the wicker, cane and wine making industry and the improvement on the then means of transport which was by way of “cow-cart”.
The clip also shows the horse-shoe shaped harbour prior to the construction of the existing Molhe (quayside/pier) as well as the Funchal amphitheatre town.
The narrator positively remarks on how the year-round aromas of fresh fruits and flowers, the forest, immaculately hand embroidered linen cloth and the Monte toboggan carriers bring life to the streets and suburbs of Madeira’s yesteryear lifestyle.
