GLOBAL WARMING EFFECTS ON PORTUGAL – MADEIRA ISLAND COMES UP TOPS AS THE LEAST VULNERABLE
Madeira Island has been effectively been reported to reflect the least vulnerable of all regions in Portugal in regard to predictions on future impacts as a result of global warming. This report was divulged at a recent EU study “REGIONS 2020” held last week in Brussels by the European Union Regional Politics Commissioner, Prof. Danuta Hübner.
Global warming has become an undeniable reality. Natural causes can only explain a small part of this phenomenon. The European Commission prepared a prospective analysis to explore probable regional implications of global warming effects on 4 major challenges facing European Union regions in the year 2020 - Globalization, Climatic Changes, Demographics, Access and utilization of Energy; for each of these four challenges an indexed scale of vulnerability levels between 1 – 100 were considered. Madeira Island scored a total of 43 reflecting the Portuguese region with the least vulnerability levels.
Other regions in Portugal scored as follows:
Açores Islands – 53
North Portugal – 61
Lisbon – 65
Centre Portugal – 69
Alentejo – 80
Algarve (southern Portugal) - 83
For all those thinking of retiring or investing in a second home, climate is of fundamental importance. Madeira Island in Portugal offers one of the finest year round climates in the whole of Europe.
