For those planning to buy property in Madeira before the end of 2008, my advice is to have it registered only after the 1st of January 2009. From this date onwards, registering property can be effected at any of the 337 national notary offices dispersed throughout Portugal and the islands. Up to the present time it has been obligatory to register the property purchased in the notary office where same is located.
