FUNCHAL CITY NEWS - MADEIRA ISLAND PORTUGAL
Funchal city, the capital of Madeira Island is the first insular city within Portugal to adhere to the CIVITAS European project aimed at improving air quality, increasing the accessibility and reducing the noise levels in general. In Madeira, the project is the same as that being practiced in Bolonha (Italy), Gdansk (Poland), Talin (Estonia) and Utrecht in Holland. The project is part of a joint scheme between the Town Council of Funchal, the Horários do Funchal (public transport company) and the Madeira Technopolo, supported by the technical aid of AREAM - The Regional Agency for Environmental and Energy Affairs. This project is essential in the ongoing global studies and initiatives with a view to enforcing sustainable urban mobility. Soon the Funchal Municipality will provide a pollution-free electric vehicle for public transport use, which will operate between Praia Formosa and the city centre of Funchal.
