A POSITIVE TURNING POINT IN THE ECONOMY OF MADEIRA
Madeira Island has virtually been in isolation for decades due to the controlled airspace between the island and the mainland continent of Portugal, which has been reigned almost exclusively by TAP the national airline carrier. Residents, visitors and the economy have paid a high price for this monopolistic situation. Portugal’s tourism secretary announced in the local press earlier on this week that the Portuguese Government’s approval in April of this year of the liberalization of the national airspace to Madeira will contribute positively to Portugal and Madeira’s tourism industry as a whole and will further benefit local residents, national and international consumers by offering them a much broader choice in their travelling decisions; competition is beneficial to everyone. The high demand for flights via EASYJET from Madeira to Lisbon and vice-versa substantiate this statement. The local Madeiran Secretary of Tourism and Transportation stated that Porto and Faro cities in Portugal are also to be connected by low-cost carriers in the very near future.
