MADEIRA PROPERTY TAX - CÂMARA DE LOBOS CITY
In an effort to compel and provoke landlords and owners to revamp/restore their decaying and uninhabited homes in the city of Câmara de Lobos, the municipal town council has recently proposed increasing the present municipal property taxes (IMI) for 2009.
Should the proposal be accepted, this increase will only affect properties which are neglected and present an “eyesore” in the landscape of Câmara de Lobos. The Council is adamant that the amount of properties left uninhabited, isolated and in an abandoned state be reduced which will impact positively on the general image of the area and will also lead to enhancing property values.
Holding land in an unimproved, non-income generating form becomes expensive with a land value tax. The proposed increase in IMI should inspire these respective owners to take action by improving thier properties in order to turn around their investment.
The recently “designated” city of Câmara de Lobos was given its name by the explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira due to the many sea-lions (“lobos”) in existence there at the time. This picturesque fishing village has the second highest sea cliff in the world – the “Cabo Girão”. In 1950, Sr Winston Churchill spent some time there where he painted the bay which subsequently became a favourite painting of his. Traditional fishing is still practised and colourful boats which are made and painted in the city by locals fill the charming and scenic bay.
There are some great seafood, fish and meat restaurants in the area plus a variety of “tascas” - pubs and bars which normally get crowded in the evenings where you can taste the famous “poncha” drink - a sugar-cane rum, honey and fresh lemon or orange juice drink. The best “espetada” (a large traditional garlic and bay leaf Kebab) is said to be enjoyed in Camara de Lobos.
Only within 5km’s from the centre of Funchal and 25 kms from the airport, the city is conveniently located for prospective property investors in the area.
