MADEIRA GARAJAU-CANIÇO - SANTA CRUZ – EASTERN COASTLINE OF MADEIRA ISLAND

The village of Caniço has been developing at a pretty fast pace over recent years yet has managed to retain an unruffled and key luxury edge to this tranquil and attractive inland village of Santa Cruz. Both the Palheiro and Santo da Serra Golf Courses are a short distance away and clean and crystal clear waters along the coastal stretch of Garajau’s natural marine park are perfect for scuba diving enthusiasts, with numerous scuba diving schools in the region. A Christ the King monument on the promontory boasting magnificent Atlantic ocean views, overlooks the lovely pebble beach below for keen sea-bathers.

MADEIRA GARAJAU’S MARINE PARK NATURE RESERVE – THE FIRST PORTUGUESE EXCLUSIVELY MARINE RESERVE.

Garajau’s partial Natural Reserve, located near Caniço on the southern coastline of Madeira and east of the Funchal Bay was established in 1986. The marine park which is 376 hectares with a coastal length of approximately seven kms includes a strip stretching from the high tide line into the ocean at a depth of 50 metres. Amongst the fauna of this park are larger fish such as the Epinephelus guaza and also a variety of other coastal species. Groups of Atlantic manta rays (manta birostris) can also be seen here. Their size and graceful movement has transformed the area into an international attraction for scuba and skin diving enthusiasts. Sea urchins, sea cucumbers, starfish, brittle stars, sponges and sea anemones can also be found on the rocky substrate and large colonies of eels can be seen on the sandy floors. Fishing is forbidden inside the park and navigation is also strictly controlled and only small boats are allowed to approach the beaches. Quality of water allows great visibility below depths of 20 metres for scuba diving enthusiasts; a support centre is located in the Cais do Lazareto in the westernmost limit of the Reserve, where Environmental Education programmes are implemented and equipment/facilities are available for filling diving bottles.
